The SPE Gallery is located at SPE’s headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio. The Gallery was established in 2014 as an important initiative of SPE’s 50th Anniversary campaign, “Future Focus.” The Gallery is a supportive venue for the lens-based practice of SPE’s members by providing a year-round public forum for exhibitions, workshops, community and educational programs, and other career enhancing opportunities.
Kelli Connell / Double Life: Fifteen Years
January 13, 2017 - April 14, 2017
Opening Reception: Friday, January 13, 5:00 - 8:00pm
Kelli Connell’s body of work, Double Life, is now in its fifteenth year. Throughout this time we’ve seen the unfolding of an intimate and complex dynamic of a woman’s relationship; defined perhaps as a self-portrait acted out by another, or perhaps a metaphor for all relationships, or perhaps still a view of an everlasting affair with the self. As this series continues, it begins to take new shape as we now see the characters begin to age. Yet as they grow older, the emotional bonds established in the beginning of this series still hold strong with the familiarity of a long marriage.
Connell states, “This work represents an autobiographical questioning of sexuality and gender roles that shape the identity of the self in intimate relationships. Polarities of identity such as the masculine and feminine psyche, the irrational and rational self, the exterior and interior self, the motivated and resigned self are portrayed. By combining multiple photographic negatives of the same model in each image, the dualities of the self are defined by body language and clothing worn. This work is an honest representation of the duality or multiplicity of the self in regards to decisions about intimate relationships, family, belief systems and lifestyle options.”
Kelli Connell: Double Life / Fifteen Years is a traveling exhibition organized by the Society for Photographic Education and is made possible in part by Cuyahoga Arts & Culture and by state tax dollars allocated by the Ohio Legislature to the Ohio Arts Council (OAC). The OAC is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally, and economically.
