International Achromatic Photography Exhibition
Midwest Center for Photography / Deadline: 05/01/26
White being the reflection of all light wavelengths makes it a visual sensation of all colors. White is the absence of color when viewed as a pigment, while it is physically the presence of all colors of light wavelengths. The photographs featured in the White exhibition will encompass images comprised of various chromatic colors with the emphasis being on the lightest end of the color spectrum. Varying degrees of the absence or presence of saturation, white can be approached photographically as a neutral in contrast to dark hues, or as varying shades of color with white being the dominant visual element.
How much of a story can be told with the least amount of color? The challenge of this exhibition will be to limit the use of color and find how little of pigment can be used to convey a striking photograph. The process of photography captures light, and we seek out and determine the intensity and vividness of that light. For this exhibition, we photograph to represent the achromatic color of white.
Aiming our cameras at a snow covered field, clouds in the sky, a snowcone, marshmallows, a flower, seafoam on a hot summer day, cotton, a crisp white shirt, all can be used as subject matter among many others to convey the concept of white. White gives the impression of space, airy and open, white can be seen as warm white or cool white. The nature of color temperature can create feelings and associations psychologically, whether meditative, stark, or dreamy. White implies simplicity, a fresh and clean feel. Among all of the various approaches to the concept of white, the featured photographs will encompass a wide range of interpretations in this neutral themed exhibition.
Selected artists will have their work featured in the exhibition and online.
