Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center / Deadline: 03/08/26
The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, invites visual artists and designers to submit works of art about a subtractive process (i.e. carving, etching, scraping, erasing, cutting, etc). Open to all traditional and non-traditional genre and media, including 2D, 3D, etc.
Reduction, as a principle, is about revelation. The process of clearing away excess clarifies what is essential. You remove the mass, the noise, the material that isn't, and discover what is. In this way, reduction asserts economy as a primary principle in achieving successful art, making removal an intentional creative act rather than one of correction.
Acid biting into metal, an eraser rubbing away dust, a blade cutting into wood are all physical conversations between artist and material. Where the blank and daunting white page asks the artist to add meaning through accumulation, the subtractive process instead recognizes that an image or object already exists—waiting to be excavated, carrying the signature of its nature through to final realization.
$45 for up to THREE entries submitted. $5 per each additional entry.
