Penumbra Foundation / Deadline: 01/15/21
The Penumbra Artist in Resident Program is the centerpiece of Penumbra's programmatic activity and it marries our commitment to artist practice and experimentation with our dedication to the craft, the science and the technology of photography. What makes Penumbra unique in the cultural landscape of New York City is our engagement with the process history of photography and our belief in the myriad of possibilities in the craft, coupled with the embrace of new imaging methodologies. Given the widespread abandonment of the analogue photographic processes, there remain fewer opportunities for artists to explore these fundamental pathways and techniques.

The Penumbra-Workspace-Program is open to US and NYC based emerging artists working in photo-based imaging.
Applicants using alternative techniques and/or new interpretations of historic processes to produce their art are encouraged to apply.
Applicants must be US residents.
Students enrolled in an academic program during the time of requested residency are not eligible to apply.
Participants are requested to give a talk to the Penumbra Community during their residency.
The Penumbra Workspace Program will benefit six US based emerging artists* during 2021 with access to time, facilities, critical and technical support, and honoraria. The extension of the program ranges from two weeks to four weeks depending on the time requested by the selected artists. Participants have liberal access to the workspace facilities.
Application consists of 20 work samples of a cohesive body of work, a detailed proposal, artist statement, resume, preferred time and duration of residency (from July until the end of December).
Submissions are reviewed once a year by a rotating panel of arts professionals (suggested by Penumbra Advisory Board and the Director of Programs) that will decide based on supplied materials and feasibility of the applicant's proposal.
Selected artists will be notified between 30 days after the committee has finished reviews.
