Filter Photo   /   Deadline: 07/18/14

In recognition of the increasing importance of the photo book, Filter Photo is pleased to announce an open call for our first ever photo book exhibition! Our goal is to showcase well-thought-out, original, and compelling photo books in a public exhibition with a reception during the 2014 Filter Photo Festival.

Fees

Photographers may submit up to 3 entries, with a fee of $20 for 1 book and $5 for each additional book.

Eligibility

Eligible entries include all types of photo books, whether self-published, handmade, or commercially published. Books by or featuring the work of more than one photographer/artist are also eligible in to submit. All are welcome to apply.

Requirements

Submitted books must arrive with sufficient return postage or be dropped off in person. If sufficient return postage is not included, or if the work is left beyond the pickup date after the exhibition closes, neither Harrington College of Design nor Filter Photo will be responsible. Filter Photo is not responsible for any damages incurred during shipping.

To register for the exhibition, please complete the form located here. Only submissions made using this form will be considered.

Awards

A Juror's choice award and honorable mention will be awarded. The Juror's choice award comes with a $500 cash prize.

Books accepted into the exhibition will be treated as donations to Filter Photo and will not be returned. These donations will be treated as tax deductible donations. Filter Photo will take measures to secure the books during display.

Evaluation Criteria

Selected entries will be exhibited at Harrington College of Design's ground floor gallery for the month of September with a reception and juror's talk on Wednesday, September 24th. The reception will be a featured event of the 2014 Filter Photo Festival. The juror is Gregory Harris, Assistant Curator of the DePaul Art Museum.

Gregory Harris is the assistant curator at the DePaul Art Museum, where he curated the exhibitions The Sochi Project: An Atlas of War and Tourism in the Caucasus (2014), Studio Malick: Portraits from Mali (2012) and We Shall: Photographs by Paul D'Amato (2013), for which he wrote the accompanying catalog. Previously he served as a guest curator and research assistant in the photography department at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he organized the exhibitions In the Vernacular (2010) and Of National Interest (2008). Harris earned a BFA in photography from Columbia College Chicago, and an MA in art history from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
