2018 SPE Media Festival

The Society for Photographic Education (SPE) has featured a film and video festival of innovative and provocative short documentaries, animation and fiction as part of the Annual Conference since 1995. The festival began as the SPE Women's Film and Video Festival and evolved into a festival featuring work curated by the organization’s three caucuses, the Women’s Caucus, Multicultural Caucus and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Queer Caucus. The Society for Photographic Education is the primary academic organization for photographic media professionals and the Annual Conference draws 1200-1500 participants annually. The conference theme for 2018 is Uncertain Times: Borders, Refuge, Community, Nationhood .

Location

The 2018 SPE Media Festival will be screened at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, in Philadelphia, PA on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 1-3, during the 2018 SPE Annual Conference. Filmmakers will also have the option to have their films included in a password-protected On-line Video Festival available to SPE members from June 2018-March 2019.

Fees

Entry fee for submissions received by 11:59 PM, August 31, 2017 is free for SPE members. Enter SPEmember in the space for discount code or waiver. Earlybird fee for non-members is $10. Entry fee for submissions received September 1 - October 31 is $15. Fee for submissions received November 1- November 15 is $25.

Eligibility

- Filmmakers may submit different work to more than one category, but the same video cannot be submitted to multiple categories.
- All works must be under 30 minutes, including credits; there is not completion date limitation.
- We are looking for films that address visual, educational, and social-political issues with integrity, honesty, and justice. All rights must be cleared.
- Filmmakers do not have to be SPE members.

Requirements

FilmFreeway entries must include the following:

- a web link to the full video - If password protected, include password.
- contact information for filmmaker (name, address, email and telephone number)
- Distributor information if different than filmmaker
- short (maximum 50 words) film synopsis
- short director’s bio (maximum 50 words)
- awards and festival screenings
- exact running time (do not count color bars, black, etc.)

Accepted filmmakers must provide a Quicktime H.264 file at the original dimensions, up to 1920px x 1080px, by Dec. 15, 2017.

Evaluation Criteria

This is a juried festival with no specific awards. Accepted films will be screened at the festival venue. Accepted filmmakers will be notified by December 8, 2017.
