This year's conference represents the commitment of imagination, energy, and many, many hours dedicated both by long-term SPE veterans and by a new generation of artists and educators working together within the Society for Photographic Education. The theme, "Sprawl," has inspired all of us, as we have engaged in our national conversation about the effects of urban growth, and the consequences of that growth. The reverberation of concern about sprawl is far-reaching, and has become central to what it means to participate in a democracy at this time.
