About the Department/College
The Northern Arizona University School of Communication (School) is seeking to fill the position of assistant teaching professor of photography. The ideal candidate should be a student-focused professional dedicated to preparing students for success in the field of commercial photography. The ideal candidate will have at least one year of successful teaching experience at the college or university level and a strong professional photography portfolio, with experience in product, portrait, event, lifestyle, and studio commercial photography.

About the Position
Northern Arizona University's School of Communication invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor appointment on the Flagstaff Campus beginning August 2024. This is a teaching-focused position on our career track (non-tenure-eligible), working closely with our students in the studio, computer labs, and on-locations to build their confidence and skills in commercial photography. It is expected to be a continuing line with yearly renewals and has the potential for promotion. Renewal is contingent upon successful completion of a probationary year, effective performance, continued funding, and department needs.

The School of Communication Photography Program is part of the School of Communication within the College of SBS, offering an undergraduate Photography program (with a B.S. and a minor in Photography) along with programs in: Communication Studies, Creative Media and Film, Journalism, Strategic Communication and Visual Communication. The Photography program is committed to student success, including preparing them for commercial photography careers. After graduation, our students pursue photography-related careers in the following fields: wedding and portrait, events, travel and wildlife, retouching, studio management, photography blogger/content creator, sports, fashion, and freelance photography.
Responsibilities Include:
• Teaching commercial photography courses; potential courses: Theory and Psychology of Photography, Intro to Photography, Intermediate Photography, Studio and On-location Portraiture, Food/Product Photography, Event Photography, and Adventure Photography
• Teaching Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop workflow
• Supervision of photography internship students
• Overseeing photography equipment and two studio facilities
• Service and committee work at the School of Communication, college, and university levels
This non tenure track position is a 9 month academic year teaching position.
Minimum Qualifications
• A master's degree in photography or a closely related field completed by August 2024.
• At least one year of teaching experience at the college or university level.
Preferred Qualifications
• More than one year of full-time teaching experience at the college or university level.
• More than one year of full-time working experience in commercial photography.
• Experience running a freelance photography business.
• Mastery and knowledge of current versions of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.
• Experience in shooting portrait photography, along with a portfolio of commercial photography available upon request.
• Experience in shooting outdoor photography.
• Experience in shooting photographing events.
• Experience in shooting lifestyle/adventure photography.
• Professional use of studio and studio lighting equipment.
• Experience shooting with professional camera gear.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge
• Knowledge of photography practices and tools, including professional DSLR and mirrorless camera systems, off-camera flash, and studio strobes.
• Understanding of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop workflow.

Compensation & Benefits
Salary range begins at $60,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the http://nau.edu/Provost/Resources-Policies/. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election.
