The Department of Studio Arts at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor of Digital Media and Performance with a focus in Animation beginning September 1, 2024, pending budgetary approval. This full-time position is an appointment stream (outside the tenure stream), a three-year position with the possibility for renewal, and would be affiliated with the Film and Media Studies Program. It cannot be held simultaneously with other full-time employment, either on or off-campus.

The Department of Studio Arts emphasizes integrative art-making that relates to all realms of our complex contemporary world. We are committed to providing our students with a variety of perspectives, mentors, and role models. The department currently offers hands-on undergraduate courses in Visual Thinking, Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Installation, Printmaking, Digital Photography, Digital Imaging, Animation, and Video. We seek a colleague whose studio support, teaching, and service will extend our mission by contributing diverse perspectives and experiences to program and departmental initiatives.



Duties

Teach 3 courses per semester in Animation, Digital Imaging, and Performance with support in Visual Thinking (Foundation Design equivalent)
Meet with students beyond the classroom as may be appropriate to their educational needs
Work closely with other faculty to coordinate curricular plans
Share responsibilities managing the digital lab
Support the university and the department through shared and rotating service efforts

Minimum Requirements

Professional degree in Studio arts (MFA or equivalent)
Broad knowledge and experience in a variety of digital technologies that may include 2D and 3D animation, raster and vector image creation/editing, code, 3D/VR/AR, digital fabrication, and/or emerging practices
Broad knowledge and experience with performance art that may include live, interactive, multimedia, virtual, site-specific, social practice, and/or expanded practices
Knowledge of composition, relationships of form and content, principles of color, aesthetic issues, visual analysis, perception, and the importance of visual choice, purpose, and creativity in an image-oriented culture
Expansive knowledge of art history, contemporary issues in new media, and critical dialogue in the visual arts
Commitment to the values of equity, inclusion, accessibility, and diversity

Preferred Requirements

Preferred University level teaching experience
Preferred commitment to a professional show record
Preferred knowledge of Canvas or other online LMS

15-20 samples of each of the candidate's creative work and their students' work accompanied by a descriptive list
