Job Summary:

The Department of Design at Eastern Washington University (EWU) invites applications for a one-year sabbatical-replacement Lecturer position with expertise in Visual Communication Design to begin in September 2022.
The Department of Design has eight full time faculty and roughly 150 undergraduate majors. Located in the new, net zero energy Catalyst Building in Spokane WA, the Department of Design is a community-engaged department prioritizing collaboration with community partners on project-based student learning.

We are seeking broadly trained candidates who will be inspirational teachers, role models, and mentors who complement the strengths of our faculty to engage in instructionally-intensive undergraduate programs. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching. Candidates must show a high degree of interest in human and cultural diversity with a demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach to teaching that supports the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff, and the community. Additionally, all faculty are expected to actively participate in assessment of student learning.
The ideal candidate will be interested in working collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines; working with nonprofits, government agencies, businesses, and other educational institutions on collaborative courses and projects; and be committed to advancing the design disciplines through one's practice and approach to design education. Candidates should exhibit a strong foundational understanding of visual communication design, digital foundations, photography and photographic media, systems design, design thinking, and sustainable design practices. Required Qualifications:

• Either a Master's or Bachelor's degree in Visual Communication Design or related field with relevant industry experience, with an emphasis in photography and photographic media, visual communication design, and/or digital foundations. The degree must be completed by the appointment date.
• Strong interest in teaching visual communication design courses that might include photography, design foundations, digital foundations, typography, or web design.
• Excellent communication skills to meet the needs of our diverse student body.
• Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff and the public.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Either an MFA or MDes with 2+ years of relevant experience, a Master's with 3+ years of relevant industry experience, or a Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of relevant industry experience in Visual Communication Design or related field, with an emphasis in photography and photographic media.
• At least 1 year of teaching experience.
• Proficiency using software programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
• Interest in working collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines and through project-based learning; engaging with community on collaborative courses and projects.

This position, during the course of university employment will be involved inthe receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value;as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled,vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employmentis contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background checkprior to beginning employment.

All new employees must comply with EWU immunization Policy 602-02 and provide proof of immunity or vaccination to MMR and proof they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before beginning work at EWU, Waivers for the immunization requirements are available for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs.

Note: Interviews may be conducted via Zoom (camera must be enabled). While we anticipate being open for in-person instruction for academic year 2022-23, should Washington State or university pandemic restrictions disallow for in-person instruction, then courses will be taught via onlineplatforms, including Zoom and other technologies. Candidates must be able to demonstrate competence using these technologies.

Salary Information: The expected salary upon hire is $60,678.
