Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Photography within the Audain Faculty of Art. Situated on unceded, traditional and ancestral xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territories in Vancouver, Canada, Emily Carr University is a world-renowned learning and research community dedicated to the education of artists and designers.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Photography major focuses on developing critically engaged and contextually aware photographic work. Situated within the Audain Faculty of Art, the Photography program at Emily Carr University fosters the development of student practice within the context of contemporary art discourse, with a strong technical and conceptual foundation, and a keen awareness of the relationship between photography and a range of disciplines and practices.
Candidates should be able to teach students at multiple levels, from Foundation to Graduate Studies, and will be expected to contribute to developing curriculum in an institution that is committed to the interrelation of theory and practice. The successful candidate will join a rigorous and committed team of Art faculty that includes the following curriculum areas: Photography, Illustration, Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Print Media, Sculpture + Expanded Practices, Interdisciplinary Visual Art and Praxis, as well as minors in Curatorial Practices and Art + Text. Candidates should be equally fluent in contemporary photography discourse and studio practice and in balancing the conceptual, aesthetic and technical demands of the discipline. Additionally, faculty are expected to participate in portfolio reviews, upper-level critiques, provide graduate student supervision, serve on administrative committees, engage in research, and to be an active member of the Emily Carr community. The successful candidate will have an active artistic research practice and a substantial exhibition and/or publication record with a solid, demonstrable foundation in photographic practice. The successful candidate will have an established career profile and be active in national and international contexts.
A successful candidate will have the following qualifications and/or related experience:
• terminal degree (e.g. MFA), or the equivalent combination of education and professional experience;
• university‐level or post‐secondary teaching experience in a related subject area is preferable;
• intercultural competence: the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people of various cultures;
• strong evidence of excellence in photographic practice, including the ability to integrate new tools, media and methods including new digital media and processes into teaching;
• expertise in a range of traditional and contemporary methods of making;
• knowledge of traditional, emergent and experimental photo-based practices, which may include projected and moving imagery, the integration of new and expanded media, collaborative, public and installation practices, historical and experimental non-silver processes, non-Western and/or Indigenous approaches, and more;
• significant evidence of active engagement with discourse within contemporary photographic practices, histories and theories of photography, and more broadly in contemporary art discourse.
Expertise in the following areas will be considered an asset:
• advanced digital photography including post-production;
• studio photography and lighting;
• traditional analogue photography including medium and large format and darkroom processes.

Subject to budgetary approval, we anticipate commencement in August 2021. Salary and rank will be commensurate with professional status and teaching experience.
