America's Hometown Movie Theaters - Pre-orders Now Open!
For over 43 years, Benita VanWinkle has visited small towns and cities, documenting over 1,150 movie theaters built before 1965, in every state. These places are celebrated not only for their beauty, but also for their ability to bring communities together, whether with a film or a special event that needs a place to gather. Each theater has a short history, and many have stories from patrons and owners interviewed or recorded by the author. Connecting many theater owners with resources to help sustain their theaters, this project has had far-reaching positive effects. To print 1,000 copies for the book launch on National Movie Theater Day, April 23, 2026, pre-orders are needed by the end of October 2025. If you love movies, incredible architecture, community innovation, and supporting the efforts of a working artist, please consider ordering this significant contribution to documentary photography.
