SPE Remembers Barbara DeGenevieve

The following obituary for longtime SPE member, Barbara DeGenevieve, has been provided by School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Accomplished artist and educator at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), Barbara DeGenevieve, 67, passed away on Saturday, August 9, following a battle with cancer.

DeGenevieve started teaching at SAIC in 1994. She served as the Chair of the Photography department for more than a decade, as well as numerous other posts in the School, including the Graduate Division Chair. Having been at SAIC for nearly 20 years, she impacted hundreds of students. She was a forward-thinking, engaged educator whose approach to teaching allowed her students to grow and thrive, not only as artists but as individuals. DeGenevieve was deeply intellectual-conversant in theory and history-and demanding and rigorous in her studio practice and in the classroom.

DeGenevieve's work is featured in collections at various museums around the world, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum; Seattle Museum of Art; Center for Creative Photography, Tucson; and the Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque. She was also a published researcher in Exposure, SF Camerawork Quarterly, Herotica, and P-Form, and the recipient of various grants and fellowships. She was twice awarded National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship, and also received the Art Matters Foundation Fellowship, three Illinois Arts Council Fellowships, the Compton Fellowship for Visual Art, and the Chicago Artists International Traveling Fellowship.

DeGenevieve received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Wilkes College in 1969. She received a Master of Science degree from Southern Connecticut State University in 1972. She went on to attend the University of New Mexico, where she received her Master of Arts in 1979 and Master of Fine Arts in photography in 1980.

DeGenevieve leaves behind her sister, Karen, and her dog, Jackson. A memorial will be held at SAIC in the fall semester.
