Deborah Orloff: Holzwege

Deborah Orloff: Holzwege Ann Miller Gallery, Wittenberg University, Springfield, OH Aug 26, 2013 - Sept 20, 2013 This exhibition features Deborah Orloff's ongoing series of surreal photomontages. Holzwege, the German word for wood-path, refers to paths in the forest that lead nowhere. These paths meander through the woods and end abruptly. Orloff uses the wood-path as a metaphor for life's uncertainty as you never know where one of these paths will take you. Her invented landscapes represent the universal experience we all have inevitably, when unexpected circumstances dictate a change of plans. Yet, the images are ethereal and optimistic, conveying the sense of wonder that exists when we open ourselves up to new possibilities and realize that change is often fortuitous. According to Orloff, although a dead-end is suggested, the connotation is not necessarily negative. Rather, the inability to move forward presents opportunities for exploration, transformation, and previously unimagined destinies.
