Mary Ann Lynch Feature on Roger Ballen in B&W Magazine (Issue 81)now on the stands

Roger Ballen lives in Johannesburg, South Africa, but that didn't keep Mary Ann Lynch from logging several substantive phone conversations with this living master of photography, who has chosen to live far from the limelight since the 1980s. In "Roger Ballen: In and Out of the Abyss," (B&W Issue 81 /March 2011), Lynch tracks Ballen's evolution as an artist, which she calls "a relentless spiritual journey." As compelling evidence, her ten-page article offers 19 photographs as well as Ballen's memorable quotes, among them: "Art should be like a virus...the first thing it has to do is get into your stomach somehow and just stick in there. A lot of phography we see just goes through your head or through the air."
