Meet the presenters of SPE’s 2027 Annual Conference!
We’re excited to introduce Christine Lenzen, presenting “Life After Death: Photography’s Role in the Aftermath of Loss”
“Following my mother’s illness and death, my photographic practice shifted from documenting the end of a life toward exploring what remains after loss and how photography can facilitate continued connection. This presentation reflects on several interconnected bodies of work created during and after four years of caregiving, including documentary photographs paired with excerpts from my mother’s writing, cyanotype photograms made with inherited family objects and bodily traces, altered archival photographs, and works incorporating cremated remains.”
About the Presenter
Christine Lenzen is a Minneapolis-born artist and educator interested in how photography can materially and emotionally engage memory, loss, and personal history. Her recent projects explore grief, inheritance, and care through alternative photographic processes and material archives. She received her BFA from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and her MFA from the University of Notre Dame. She currently resides in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where she oversees the photography program at Northern Michigan University.
