Street Photography with a Large Format Camera

Imagemaker: JR Ancheta

Friday, September 13 - 4:00PM to 4:45PM
ELIF 301

I first used a large format camera in 2013 in Fairbanks. I was intrigued by the camera and the techniques people used to make images before more modern cameras. I fell in love with this extremely hands-on process and I enjoy combining the analog and digital technologies. Since then, I've been gradually solving the logistical challenges of taking such a large camera with me when I travel.

The large format camera's weight inherently leads to limitations in mobility and accessibility compared to smaller, more portable, digital and analog cameras. I am also limited in how many photos I can make on a particular expedition because of the weight and bulk of however many film holders I am able to carry. The parameters of large format photography force me to slow down, both in my seeing and my image-making.

When I stumble upon on a location that I find interesting and that seems to have the potential for a good picture, I previsualize the image and compose the photo while considering what I hope for. Then I must wait until all the elements of the image walk into the frame.

Making photographs this way is humbling because of the numerous images I've missed when the camera wasn't ready. When everything works, however, it is incredibly exhilarating to see the results.
