Steven Benson is a freelance photographer/videography. He was formerly Professor of Photography/Video and Chair of the Southeast Center for Photographic Studies. Numerous collections include the Museum of Fine Art-Houston, Detroit Institute of Arts, Bibliotheque Nationale-France, Centre Georges Pompidou, Museet for Fotokunst-Denmark. Solo exhibitions of his photography include the Centre Georges Pompidou and photography festivals/biennials/triennials in Argentina, South Korea, Germany, Syria, Poland, China, Denmark and FotoFest (twice). A retrospective of his work was on view at the Southeast Museum of Photography in 2012. His photographs were on exhibit at the Appleton Museum of Art, "Invented Observations", a 35-year survey of his B&W work during 2022. His photography collection was on exhibition at the Southeast Museum of Photography, "Gathering Light", was on view in 2022. The Russian curator Irina Chmyreva, is including his series of hand colored images, "Incantations", in her exhibition for Pingyao Festival of Photography, "Spirituality", 2023.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
