Another Stranger with a Film Camera

Wolfgang Hastert is a photographer and documentary/ experimental filmmaker based in San Diego.

His films on American artists and photographers have been presented world-wide. He made documentaries about Paul Outerbridge, "anonymous" cult photographer James Bidgood, and he portrayed Shelby Lee Adams and his subjects in Appalachia.

Wolfgang holds an MFA from Duke University's program in Experimental & Documentary Arts. He studied with Alex Harris, Tom Rankin, and William Noland at the Center for Documentary Studies. Wolfgang was also mentored as a graduate student by Arno Rafael Minkkinen at Maine Media College.

Wolfgang often uses experimental & alternative approaches and is working at the intersection of the moving and the still image. In addition to his time-based works he has been making hand-made artist books.

Wolfgang teaches photography, documentary & digital media production at UC San Diego.
