Hauntology and the Death of the Future

Savannah Calhoun

Saturday, March 08 - 2:00PM to 2:30PM
Tuscany 10

In this talk, artist Savannah Calhoun will discuss the philosophies of Mark Fisher in connection to her work, Meta Specter. Referencing two texts by Fisher, Capitalist Realism and Ghosts of My Life, Calhoun connects imagemaking and photography's relationship with death to the concept of "hauntology," a term created by Jacques Derrida. "Hauntology" is a combination of the words "haunting" and "ontology," describing a world in which we live where we are haunted by the art and culture of the past due to a lack of resources supporting the arts in the present.
