Concentric Pedagogy: Queer/Feminist Critique, Active Listening & Third Classroom

Heather Takahashi O'Brien

Saturday, March 08 - 1:30PM to 2:30PM
Tuscany 11

A concentric classroom offers a phenomenological approach, driven by feminist/queer critiques, active listening, and the aim to offer another gaze. This presentation will discuss how to create a 'Third Classroom Space,' informed by Homi K. Bhaba's Third Space Theory, and the works of Augusto Boal and Paulo Freire. How do we embolden photographers, subjects, and stories across apocalyptic geo-political situations? This work is framed by the artist's teaching experience at The American University of Beirut, Lebanon--through the October 17, 2019 revolution, the country's ongoing economic collapse, the Beirut Explosion of 2020--while considering the current war and bombing in Lebanon.
