In this presentation, we will examine the history and impact of the manipulated image from the time of Edward Curtis, who traveled the Western territories in the early 1900's, through modern day Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated images. Asking the question: is an image manipulated if you ask the subject to pose for a response? If you use darkroom or image processing tools? If you generate all or part of the image using AI?
We will explore these topics and attempt to answer the overall question of what is the role of the manipulated image for the modern day photographer.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
