In the orderly chronology of film photography there is a template that details the mode and manner of imagistic progression: the contact sheet. At once the practical apparatus of a roll of photographic film, contact sheets increase the measure of linear recognition and gestural time. They also highlight the managed selection of one photographic image over a host of others in a given grid of choices. Thus, contact sheets manage temporality, hapticity, and linearity alongside absence, inscrutability, and the vagaries of final selection. My talk will examine the fungible mechanism by which photographs are enacted into a final print. This talk will consider the photographic engagement of touch and time.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
