"It's hard to stop rebels that time travel" is a portrait and landscape-based project inspired by the fragmentary traces of maroons and runaway slaves found in historical archives. It explores maroons--enslaved individuals who escaped into wilderness areas--reimagining their survival strategies as "freedom practices" tied to the American landscape. Set in Eastern North Carolina, particularly near New Bern, a key site in the slave trade, the project is also deeply personal, as the artist traces their family history to the region. This project explores how Black individuals, past and present, seek to reconnect with ancestral landscapes and histories.
