1903 delivered the Wright brothers' airplane, Ford's Model A, and the photo postcard, a new form of photography created by the people, of them and for them. Made one at a time or in the thousands, they erased the visual difference between amateur and professional photographers. Modern as movies, they present an American place within a pageant of work, invention, race, gender, celebration and misfortune.
Scrolling today through photographs and texts, it is easy to underestimate the 1903 experience of seeing your mailman stop by to deliver an actual black and white photograph with its handwritten note. Day after day.
