"'Jāḷī' explores how embroidery empowers women in India to resist oppression, creating visibility on their own terms. Named after a screen that both conceals and reveals, the project addresses women isolated by economic hardships or domestic restrictions. During travels across Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Punjab, I photographed and interviewed these women, capturing their stories of resilience. Each woman embroidered her own portrait on muslin--Gandhi's khadi fabric--asserting control over her image. This collaboration subverts traditional artist-subject roles, giving women agency and reshaping identity through embroidery, where my lens says, 'This is how I see you,' and their stitches answer, 'This is who I am.'"
