The sun shines, but the days are hotter. The rain still comes, but the storms are stronger. This presentation contemplates the value of making art at a time when we feel powerless as individuals to affect social problems. Using my long-term project The Future is Broken about climate change as guide, I explore why 'an artist's response' empowers even when our actions do not lead directly to change. Not only does this perspective provide agency for individual makers, but it also encourages society to believe in the significance of the individual's voice. We may act alone, but we still act.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
