SPE 2014 National Conference Award Winners

2014 SPE Honored Educator
Congratulations to Susan kae Grant, SPE's 2014 Honored Educator! SPE received communications in support of Susan kae Grant's nomination from colleagues, and former students, and associates -- a true testament to the influence and inspiration she provided over a groundbreaking career of teaching, creating art and exhibiting. Susan's significant contribution to the field of photographic education and this organization, including her annual student seminar presentation (with co-presenter Mary Virginia Swanson) at SPE national conferences since 2002, are deeply appreciated. The Honored Educator Award bestows the recipient with a lifetime membership in the Society. The Honored Educator Award ceremony will take place during the national conference on Friday, March 7, at 5:30 pm.

2014 SPE Imagemaker Award
This award funded through SPE's Awards & Recognition Fund is given to a first-time imagemaker presenter at an SPE national conference with an outstanding proposal. The award consists of a $1,000 cash prize, plus a one-year membership to SPE and a 2014 national conference pass. Congratulations to Mark Strandquist, SPE's 2014 Imagemaker Award winner.

2014 SPE Student Scholarship Recipients
Congratulations to the 2014 SPE Student Scholarship recipients! Eleven student scholarships will be awarded at the 2014 SPE national conference. All SPE Student Awards, including the SPE Award for Innovations in Imaging, include a $500 travel stipend to attend the 2014 national conference, a conference fee waiver, and one-year membership to SPE. This year, as a way to highlight the work of award recipients, there will be a special section at the national conference during the Curator Portfolio Walkthrough on Friday, March 7 from 8:30 - 11:00 pm where all award winners will have their own table to showcase their portfolios and interact with conference attendees and guest curators.

2014 SPE Insight Award
The Society for Photographic Education presents the 2014 SPE Insight Award to Allan D. Coleman to recognize achievements of significant distinction to the photographic education field. SPE's Insight Award symbolizes the realization of a national or international career or the launching of future endeavors to new challenges, ideas, and horizons. Photographers (in the broadest sense of the word today), as well as scholars, curators, historians, writers, and visionaries are eligible for the Society's newest mark of recognition and distinction. Insight Award recipients demonstrate excellence in through innovative teaching, sustained mentoring of colleagues or students, contributions to technical, critical, pedagogical, or visual aspects of the field, breadth or depth of exhibition or publication, and / or sustained presence in the field. The 2014 SPE Insight Award will be presented at the SPE 2014 national conference on Friday, March 7, at 5:30 pm.

2014 SPE Future Focus Project Grant
We are pleased to announce Annu Palakunnathu Matthew as the recipient of the inaugural SPE Future Focus Project Grant. The $5000 grant, funded in part through SPE's Future Focus Campaign, supports the creation and development of specific work proposed to and chosen by a review committee, and as such, directly supports the creative and professional development of participating members. It also serves to benefit SPE in that the work comes back to the society and is shared as part of future conference programming, providing new and relevant material specifically supported and encouraged by the organization. The Future Focus Project Grant recipient will be recognized at the 2014 national conference during the plenary session on Thursday, March 6, at 7:00 pm. The results of the funded project will be presented at the 2015 national conference in New Orleans.

2014 SPE Award for Excellence in Historical, Critical and Theoretical Writing
Congratulations to Deborah Barkun who will receive the 2014 SPE Award for Excellence in Historical, Critical and Theoretical Writing for her essay "The Eye of the (Be)holder: Collaboration, Reciprocity, and Performance in AA Bronson's Parting (Self)Portrait of General Idea." Established in 2007 to honor SPE's former Executive Director, Jennifer Yamashiro, this award seeks to recognize excellence in writing in the field of photography among the Society's members. Finalists are selected from top presentation abstracts accepted to SPE's conference "Lecture" category. The award carries a cash prize of $1,000 and the winning essay will be considered for publication in a future issue of the Society's journal, Exposure.
