SPE Insight Award
This SPE Insight Award recognizes achievements of significant distinction made by individuals to the photographic education field. Measured from when careers first begin to the time when standing ovations erupt spontaneously in lecture halls, SPE's Insight Award symbolizes the realization of a national or international career or the launching of future endeavors to new challenges, ideas, and horizons. Photographers (in the broadest sense of the word today), as well as scholars, curators, writers, and visionaries-be their achievements rapid fire or accumulated over time-are eligible for the Society's mark of recognition and distinction.

Insight Award recipients demonstrate excellence in two or more of the following ways: innovative teaching; sustained mentoring of colleagues or students; broad contribution to technical, critical, pedagogical, or visual aspects of the field; breadth or depth of exhibition or publication; sustained presence in the field.

The 2013 SPE Insight Award will be presented to Ken Josephson, Nathan Lyons, Elaine Mayes, Jerry Uelsmann, Jack Wilgus and Cheryl Younger as part of the awards ceremony at the national conference on Saturday, March 10, at 5:30 pm.

The SPE Art Sinsabaugh Creative Artist Project Support Grant
Congratulations to Sylvia de Swaan, recipient of the SPE Creative Artist Project Support Grant. Sylvia's poignant work is a sequel to an earlier project of her travels through post communist Eastern Europe exploring themes of personal and collective memory and identity. For this project, she will venture to Czernowitz, the city where she was born, exploring the cultural history of the Jewish community where more than half of its Jews perished by the end of WWII. Sylvia's work will consist of a series of symbolic portraits of the survivors placing them in the context of their past.

SPE conference Award for Excellence in Historical, Critical and Theoretical Writing
The SPE Conference Award for Excellence in Historical, Critical and Theoretical Writing was established in 2007 to honor SPE's former Executive Director, Jennifer Yamashiro. This award seeks to recognize excellence in writing in the field of photography among the Society's members. Finalists are selected from top presentation abstracts accepted to SPE's conference "Lecture" category.

The Writing Award Review Committee is reviewing finalists' essays and will select the winner of the writing award to be announced at the 2013 National Conference. The award carries a cash prize of $1,000 and the winning paper will be considered for publication in a future issue of the Society's journal, exposure.
