Why Did I Say That? A Workshop in Practical Criticism

SPE member A.D. Coleman will be giving a 5-week workshop starting November 10, 2010, through the VASA Project. (To participate, register by November 3, 2010, through VASA Project, www.vasa-project.com)

For this workshop on practical criticism, participants will read ten essays by A. D. Coleman that he considers central to his ongoing project, which stretches back to 1968. Coleman and the participants will discuss his purposes in writing and publishing each of them; the strategic decisions involved (voice, tone, structure, vehicle); and the consequences, ranging from substantial to negligible.

By engaging critically with this set of carefully selected texts, in dialogue with their author, participants will come to understand how and why a critic elects to take specific positions at specific moments in time, and how the tactical decisions involved in such actions get made and executed.
