about
A graduate of Vassar College and the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Fine Arts, I began my career as a painter. I have been working as a photographer since the late '60s, after being introduced to photography by Harold Feinstein. As a result of being a photographer, I have worked on many jobs, fine arts projects, and been involved with gender identity/transgender issues, as a photographer, writer, presenter of slide shows, advocate, and ally. I am the author of "Transformations: Crossdressers and Those Who Love Them", 1990, E.P. Dutton, Inc. and "The Gender Frontier", 2004, Kehrer, Heidelberg, Germany. I am working on several new projects, one of which is "Spirit Mediums" in Myanmar and Thailand. My new book, "TransCuba", was published by Daylight Books, in 2014, and images from the book are in a solo exhibition traveling in Cuba. My work has been exhibited internationally and is in numerous permanent collections such as The Corcoran Gallery, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Bibliotheque Nationale, The Museum of Photography, Lishui, China, among others. My work is being archived at Duke University's Rare Book and Manuscript Library and the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's studies. My website: www.mariettepathyallen.com
