People and Porches

As a society, we continue to advance and continue to divide ourselves, even in architecture. We see more houses being fenced or walled in, and porches have begun to disappear. A porch is an essential space that builds a strong community and unity in society. In a time of rapid polarization, I found it important to document these often overlooked spaces.

Living and walking around Savannah, GA, I often find myself drawn to the variety of porches that line the streets, cluttered and unkempt, others meticulously organized, and some even abandoned. A porch is a fascinating paradox. It is both a private sanctuary and a public display. For many, it's a safe, personal space, yet it exists in full view of the world, giving insight into the lives of those who inhabit it. As the first thing one sees when approaching a home, a porch offers a glimpse into the character of its owner and the way they interact with their environment. How a porch is decorated, maintained, or even neglected speaks volumes about how it is used and its role in daily life.

In this project, I aim to document the many forms of porches I encounter, capturing both their physical appearance and the stories they hold. I want to go beyond just photographing the space itself; I want to include the owners of these porches and explore how they use the space and what it reflects about their lives. Each portrait tells a story not just of the porch but also of the person who has shaped it, revealing how the space functions as an extension of their personality, daily routines, and sense of home.
