about

Jeff Smudde (pr. "SMOO-dee"; he/him/his) is an artist using photography and sound working in book and installation formats. He holds an MFA in photography from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with the Distinguished Artist Fellowship and a BA in photography from Illinois State University. His poetic documentary-style work comes from a background in journalism, a Midwestern cultural upbringing, and an interest in the contemporary landscape of America. He is presently based outside of Providence, Rhode Island.


Jeff has work held by the collection of Immaterial Gallery in Urbana, IL. Sad Bird Books is his self-publishing photo book and zine imprint which began in 2019. He is a contributing writer for Float Photo Magazine doing book reviews. He hosts Ready for Mistakes, a podcast interviewing artists using photography and photo-adjacent work. He has photographed musicians and live concerts independently since 2017 and for Castle Theatre in Bloomington, IL between 2017 and 2018. He previously worked as the staff photojournalist for the Herald & Review in Decatur, IL from 2019 to 2020 and WGLT in Normal, IL from 2018 to 2019.
