Jeff Smudde (pr. "SMOO-dee"; he/him/his) is an artist from central Illinois presently based outside of Providence, Rhode Island. His practice uses analog and digital photography and sound, often working in series, books, and installations. He has exhibited his work around the United States and has published work with Immaterial Books, and in three publications by Subjectively, Objective. He holds an MFA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with the Distinguished Artist Fellowship and a BA from Illinois State University.
Jeff is an instructor for analog photography and darkroom processes at AS220 in Providence, RI. He has work held by the collection of Immaterial Gallery in Urbana, IL. Sad Bird Books is his self-publishing photo book and zine imprint. He is a contributing writer for Float Photo Magazine doing book reviews. He hosts Ready for Mistakes, a podcast interviewing artists using photography and photo-adjacent work. He has photographed musicians and live concerts both independently and was previously a staff photographer for Castle Theatre in Bloomington, IL. He was previously a staff photojournalist for the Herald & Review in Decatur, IL and WGLT in Normal, IL.
