about
Greg Banks is a photo-based artist and instructor at Appalachian State University. He earned his MFA in Photography from East Carolina University in May 2017, following dual B.A. degrees in Photography and Fine Art from Virginia Intermont College in 1998.
Since 2022, he has served as a contributing editor for Lenscratch. In 2017, Banks was one of only seven artists selected for The Light Factory's Annuále 9, and his work was recognized as one of the top five most-viewed portfolios on the online magazine Don't Take Pictures. His photographs have been exhibited throughout the South, including Slow Exposures and a solo exhibition at Emory & Henry College.
Banks' practice spans contemporary and historic image-making—from Artificial Intelligence, iPhone photography, and Photoshop to 19th-century processes, gelatin silver printing, painting, and digital output. His current work explores Appalachia, folklore, memory, history, and religion.
