From the nineteenth century to the twenty first century, there has been a shift in American culture away from a producer-oriented nation to a consumerist, much more commercial society. With recent price hikes in groceries at the supermarket, and the much more recent death of the penny in mind, I wanted to visually showcase the economic anxiety everyday people are now experiencing, represented by a forgotten, forlorn, discarded shopping cart I stumbled upon while hiking on the Lost Trail near Brea Dam Park in Fullerton, California. Amidst the dying dry weeds of the empty Brea creek bed, this concrete-filled relic of our supermarket oriented society serves as a stark reminder and cautionary tale for what could happen if we continue consuming the way we are.
