Andrew E. Hershberger is currently a Professor of Contemporary Art History and former Chair of the Division of Art History at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Ohio. Advised by Professor Peter C. Bunnell, Hershberger wrote his dissertation on the photographer Minor White and received a Ph.D. in 2001 from Princeton University. As a specialist in the history of photography, Hershberger has won a 2004 Ansel Adams Research Fellowship at the Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona, a 2007 Coleman Dowell Fellowship at New York University, the inaugural John Teti Fellowship at the New Hampshire Institute of Art in 2008, a 2009 Visiting Fellowship at St. Hilda's College, University of Oxford, and a Resident Fellowship at the Cody Institute for Western American Studies in Wyoming in 2011. His research has also been supported by a 2014 Glanz Family Research Award for Interdisciplinary Faculty Innovation and Collaboration (with Dr. Mark Munson, BGSU), and by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (co-authored), the Ohio Arts Council (co-authored), Princeton University, Princeton's Department of Art and Archaeology, the Mellon Foundation, and BGSU. Hershberger's publications include peer-reviewed journal articles in History of Photography, Art Journal, Early Popular Visual Culture, Analecta Husserliana, Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, Academe, and Arts of Asia. His book entitled Photographic Theory: An Historical Anthology (Boston and Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell, 2014) has been very positively reviewed in the journal Leonardo, on iPhotoCentral, in the History of Photography journal, and in the British Journal of Aesthetics. Hershberger is the winner of a 2015 Insight Award from the Society for Photographic Education for his work on the anthology and for his overall contributions to the field.
