The Company we Keep
The Company We Keep brings together artists who explore the many ways presence can be experienced, remembered, imagined, and embodied. A machine bears the evidence of human labor. A carved figure becomes a vessel for something larger than the individual. A portrait offers an encounter with another person and the interior life that remains unknowable. A dream reshapes memory and experience. A photograph of a place can carry the traces of those who have passed through it, holding a moment of attention.
Together, these works suggest that presence is not limited to what is physically before us. It can persist in objects, images, gestures, places, memories, and imagined worlds. What we encounter becomes part of what we carry, and what we carry continues to shape how we see.
The exhibition invites us to consider the often-unseen relationships between ourselves and the world around us—and the ways that people, things, places, and experiences continue to accompany us, even when they are no longer immediately present.
What, ultimately, is the company we keep?
