"Photobooks USA" In Conversation – Here Is New York
Join us at ICP for a conversation between Jade Doskow, Mark Lubell, and David Campany on the occasion of our latest exhibition, Photobooks USA: 2000-25, discussing the impactful photobook Here is New York: A Democracy of Photographs, which showcases the crowd-sourced photography exhibition that went up just days after the attack. Doskow will speak about the nature of photographing Freshkills Park post 9/11, with Campany and Lubell reflecting on the book's life and legacy since its publication in 2002.
About the Books
Here is New York contains nearly a thousand of the more than five thousand pictures that some three thousand photographers submitted for an ongoing exhibition organized about a week after 9/11. The magnitude and portent of this archive is best conveyed in the following expression: the one picture which will probably come to stand for the World Trade Center catastrophe will be ALL of these pictures. Speaking both to the horror of what happened and to the way it is encountered, this book of color and B&W images produces an irreducible sign of profound recognition.
About the Speakers
Jade Doskow (b. 1978, Pennsylvania, United States) lives and works in Red Hook, Brooklyn. She received a BA in the Philosophy of Art & Music from New York Unviersity's Gallatin School of Individualized Study and an MFA in Photography & Related Media from the School of Visual Arts. In exploring limbo-spaces within urban sites, Doskow's recurring themes address rewilding and sustainability, architectural repurposing, the urban built environment and public spaces, and all frequently with a focus on New York City-specific environs. Her best-known long-term projects include Freshkills, Lost Utopias, and Red Hook. Doskow's work is informed by a multitude of sources including literature, music, and local history, often using the photographic medium to question the accuracy of historical record and contemporary realities. tography. David Campany is Creative Director of the International Center of Photography, New York. He has worked worldwide with institutions including MoMA New York, Tate, Whitechapel Gallery London, Centre Pompidou, Le Bal Paris, ICP New York, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, The Photographer's Gallery London, ParisPhoto, PhotoLondon, The National Portrait Gallery London, Aperture, Steidl, MIT Press, Thames & Hudson, MACK and Frieze.
