Louie Palu: Washington DC: Impeachment to Insurrection, a photographer's first hand view
Political Year Zero is a photographer's first person view of American politics under the crushing weight of the pandemic. This body of work follows a chronology of one of the most tumultuous periods in American history. This work takes the viewer beyond the staged photo ops and provides a unique fringe view of the American political system from the Russia investigation, through 2020, both impeachments, racial unrest, Presidential election and 1/6 Capitol attack. This body of work, which includes video, offers a chance to study political conflict, build and unfold from a unique and independent perspective.
Jeremiah Ariaz: Talking Hard Traveling Battleground Blues
Made primarily in the battleground states in both public and private spaces, as well as at sites of protest and civic unrest, the photographs in Talking Hard Traveling Battleground Blues evoke the anxiety felt by many at this critical juncture in our country's history—a visual testament to the intensity of the year. The pictures were not created for an immediate news cycle and don't result in a neat or declarative narrative. They are often quiet, laden with ambiguities, and invite reflection and contemplation. Far from just an accumulation of calamities, the images attempt to visually balance politics with poetry, darkness and light to create a portrait of our shared republic.
