Related Member: Louie Palu
Documentary photographer and filmmaker Louie Palu examines social-political issues involving war and human rights in his work. Palu’s series of conceptual newspapers on the Mexican Drug War and the detention center in Guantanamo Bay explores the creation, use, control and censoring of photographs in the news. Additionally, he explores message shaping by governments and media, how the public consumes photographs and how their perceptions are shaped by photojournalism in the post 9/11 age of terror. In his lecture, Palu will present his work around conflict and violence in relation to the contemporary news landscape. He will also discuss his new documentary film Kandahar Journals, the thesis of which is the impossibility of photographs to convey the reality of war.
