Eminent Domain

Image Maker Presentation by Matt R. Rahner

Friday, October 17 - 11:30AM to 12:30PM
Conrad A. Elvehjem Building, Room 160

Eminent Domain is a documentary project that centers around the Wendell-Phillips neighborhood in east Kansas City, Missouri. In the spring of 2012 leaders in Kansas City began forcing residents to sell their homes under the guise of eminent domain. The homeowners who initially resisted were forced to leave after their houses were condemned by court order. For 18 months Rahner investigated, researched, and photographed this century old neighborhood on the brink of destruction. In his presentation Rahner will discuss his process of documentation and explore factors of race and class, which he believes played a significant role in the city's decision to evict homeowners. Through his photographs, found objects, vernacular items and archived materials, Rahner will navigate the implementation of eminent domain and its ensuing realities.

The Conrad A. Elvehjem Building is located at 800 University Ave, Madison, WI 53706.
