Collaborations with the Natural World: Experiments, Follies, and Discoveries

Joseph Mougel

Saturday, October 21 - 1:00PM to 2:00PM
RM 905

My research examines systems and resources, especially regarding landscape interventions that describe a human effort to exert control in a transitory or futile manner. I often allow natural processes to guide the outcome of my projects. I was cutting down red cedars when I noticed evidence of boring insects beneath the bark. This observation led to a series of photographs documenting trails of debris left by beetles as they exited the wood. In order to foreshadow the fate of ash trees, I created lumen prints from their fallen leaves, then let the prints drop onto the gallery floor so the silhouette of leaves slowly disappears in the ambient light. These explorations, and others, necessitate a practice of slowing down and paying attention, of responding to materials and adapting to natural conditions. Over time, I collaborate with ecological subjects, allowing them to guide me toward a more nuanced and responsive practice.
