Over the summer of 2022 I became engaged to my partner at the Indiana Dunes, a place alien to your typical Indiana landscape. This space, an outcast to the surrounding farmland, felt queer when I stepped into it. I photographed the landscape of the Dunes using 35mm bubblegum film but am interested in the capacity of film to record information beyond the light of a place. I interfere with my film by utilizing a 'soup technique,' which includes incorporating artifacts from the landscape, such as sand, into the developing process. Through physical interference, I aim to give agency to the Indiana Dunes and regard the Dunes as a collaborator in the work. This 'souping' changes the surface of the film through, for example, scratching, which physically embeds the place into the images. I then scan these negatives and enlarge them into large scale digital prints with foiled printmaking techniques.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
