Honored Educator: Deborah Lillie

Honored Educator:
Deborah Lillie lives in Thibodaux, Louisiana, where she heads the photography program in the department of art at Nicholls State University. Her teaching career began at Loyola University New Orleans, where she taught 2 and 3-D design for two years before joining the faculty at Nicholls in 1998. In addition to teaching all levels of photography and maintaining the labs, Deb also teaches a course in beginning design and works with the department's study abroad program.

Deb's involvement with SPE began in 1989 when she attended her first SPE conference as an undergraduate student. She immediately fell in love with the organization for its ability to connect photography students, faculty and industry professionals from around the country, and has been a devoted member ever since. Deb has coordinated four regional conferences since 1997 and is a member of the conference planning committee for the 2018 south central regional in Baton Rouge.

Deb received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Colorado State University in 1990, and a Master of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University in 1996. Born with a love of continued learning, Deb also has extensive experience in diverse areas including bronze casting, welding, blacksmithing, fighting forest fires, police service dog training, and the sport of triathlon. Her artwork varies from being purely photographic to a mixed media combination of photography and found objects or other documents. Throughout all the work runs a strong attention to the relationship between humans and the natural world, particularly as understood through scientific means. Her work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. in various group and solo exhibitions.
