"Remembering is an ethical act, has ethical value in and of itself." Susan Sontag, Regarding the Pain of Others. These two presenters will present complementary discussions in tandem on a common topic. As we confront the "The Fierce Urgency of Now" and its issues, we need to consider how the "now" will be remembered. When all storytelling is subjective, it is imperative to discuss the ethics of documenting reality. In today's media environment, what are the responsibilities of the photographer? Furthermore, what are the responsibilities of the photography teacher when teaching the next generation of image-makers? The conceptual frameworks, intentions, and technical approaches adopted by Brett Schenning and Giordano Angeletti to image making are very different, yet both start with the method of "straight photography" and share the goal of recounting personal "truths." As educators, it is important to consider discussions related to the artists' responsibilities to the subject, acknowledgment of photographic subjectivity, and the limitations of documentary photography. In an era where truth is being continually questioned, it is critical to address the potential the photographic medium encompasses as "evidence of reality" whether we are considering the past, present, or future.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
