"Svala's Saga" is a long-term collaborative project photographed primarily in Iceland. From beginning, we envisioned an invented photographic fairytale with multiple, interrelated images. In our story, Svala is confronted with the sudden loss of the world's birds. She then embarks on a mythic quest: as the Earth heats and cools, she journeys through the wilderness searching for the last remaining eggs. As a story about a female heroine, "Svala's Saga" harnesses the power of fiction to explore topics such as climate change and species extinction.
We chose Iceland as our setting because of its mysterious and raw scenery, as well as its rich tradition of sagas and tales. Our collaboration was intensified by the fact that we are mother and daughter. In this presentation, we will discuss various forms of collaboration we used.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
