Roundtable Conversation
Saturday, November 04 - 2:00PM to 3:00PM
Crystal Bay, Granlibakken Conference Center
What do we do when our embodied experience has been rendered unrecognizable, invisible, misrepresented, erased, or criminalized? And how does photography help us render ourselves visible, important, valuable, and worthy? Our bodies are sites of contest and contain the map of power relations within each culture, particularly in the USA, because bodies have been colonized in a multitude of ways throughout history.
Geographical references are often used to place and contextualize histories, both personal and communal. In addition to the landscape or place, the body is where personal histories happen – bearing witness to the most transforming of experiences for the individual – the body can be both a vehicle and a destination. This session aims to explore different strategies where photography helps to reclaim and recognize the rights of personhood and community as they are directly linked to the economic, social and political landscapes.
