A suburban community college might seem like an unlikely place for a revival of alternative photographic processes of the 19th and 20th centuries. However, in recent years, San Jacinto College South campus has carved itself a niche through a commitment to keep the art of darkroom photography and alternative processes alive. While many educational programs in the region, including universities, have reduced or phased out chemical photography, we have decided to allocate more resources toward these processes.
It has been a risk that has paid off for us. Through our presentation, we would like to provide an overview of our program, show representative faculty and student work in alternative processes, and provide tips to others seeking to save or expand their darkrooms in educational settings.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
