Photographing in the Shadows of Tulsa’s Legends

Dan Farnum

Friday, September 25 - 10:00AM to 10:50AM
Oklahoma City Museum of Art - Classroom A

Internationally known books about teenage angst by photographers Larry Clark and Gaylord Herron as well as author S. E. Hinton define Tulsa, Oklahoma’s cultural history. Hinton’s coming-of-age stories were also featured in multiple Hollywood movies directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Dan Farnum’s conference presentation will illustrate the influence of these acclaimed publications upon the identity of the nostalgic city. Farnum will also display photographs from his recent project called Rumbleville. Many of his photographs were created in the same neighborhoods used in Hinton’s novel The Outsiders, Clark’s seminal book Tulsa, Coppola’s film Rumble Fish, and Herron’s project titled Vagabond. Farnum will discuss the impact of Tulsa’s iconic artists upon his own photographs and his attempt to add a contemporary perspective to the canon of artwork about the city.
