Integrating Experience: Incorporating performance, time-based and three-dimensional media into photographic practice

Sunday Ballew, Libby Rowe, & Heather Stratton

Friday, September 25 - 1:00PM to 2:50PM
Oklahoma City Museum of Art - Mezzanine

In the contemporary art arena, we are seeing an ever-expanding group of photographers who branch out to incorporate performance, time-based and three-dimensional media into their practice. In doing so they create and embrace a “new normal,” one that celebrates the collective experience, while expanding the photographer’s role as editor, observer, and maker. Sunday Ballew uses video to add layers of experience to create a loosely structured narrative. Libby Rowe uses video as a bridge between private performances and a viewing audience. Hypnotic and meditative in their construction, the video work of Heather Stratton adds movement to the still image. Each of these artists employ video, performance, and/or installation with their photographs to activate multiple senses while adding layers of experience, engagement and meaning for the viewer. Other artists have no hesitation in incorporating photography into their work, but photographers, by and large, have great hesitation in incorporating other artistic media. Join us in an exploration of the impulse of some photographers to branch out and our role as educators to encourage this form of exploration in our students.
